今回は国際女性デーの企画に参加してくれてありがとう。

Sisterは2008年に女性のためのブティックとしてオープンし、今年の4月で12年目を迎えました。女性だけで何かを作り上げたくてスタートした私たちのブティックは今でも全てのスタッフは女性だけで構成されています。2年前に独立し私がオーナーになってから、本当の意味での「女性のため」とは何か？と、自分自身に問いかけるために、フェミニズムの入り口に立ち、女性支援をスタートしました。

2019年の国際女性デーにはドイツのTISSUE MAGAZINEと一緒にアイテムを製作し、売り上げの10%を国連の女性支援団体へと寄付しました。

今年の国際女性デーには渋谷PARCOの映画館「ホワイトシネクイント」でアメリカの最高裁判所裁判官であるルース・ベイダー・ギンズバーグの映画「RBG 最強の85才」上映イベントを企画しましたがCOVID-19の影響で開催をやむを得ず断念しました。

この企画に合わせてあなたには6人の女性達の刺繍をあしらったスペシャルアイテムを作って頂きましたね。私はあなたの存在をインターネットで知り、すぐにコンタクトを取りました。RBGの刺繍を作っていてピンときたんです！

温かい物作りにも惹かれたし、モデルとして選んでいる人たちのセンスもとても好きでした。そして、ジェンダー問題については、違う国の人たちと一緒に何か企画したいと思っているからです。
去年と同様に売り上げの10%を国連の女性支援団体へと寄付します。
あなたは今回の企画の連絡をもらった時にはどう思いましたか？

N－ Thank you so much for having taken part in our project for this year’s International Women’s Day.

Sister opened as ‘a boutique for women’ in 2008. We celebrated our 12th anniversary last April. Our motive when we started the shop was to create something all by women, which hasn’t changed even now with all of the staff consisting of women. In the last couple of years, I have been asking to myself what really is ‘for women’, particularly since the shop became independent and I took the ownership. In order to find answers to this question, I started to learn about feminism and to take actions for supporting women.

For International Women’s Day in 2019, we collaborated with TISSUE MAGAZINE from Germany and donated 10% of the sales to UN Women.

To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, we were originally planning a special screening of "RBG" – a film about Ruth Bader Ginsburg who is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Unfortunately, we had to cancel it in the end due to covid-19 pandemic.

As a part of the project, we asked you to make special collaboration items with 6 women embroidered.
The first time I found out about you on the internet, I contacted you right away. I immediately fell in love with your RBG embroidery!

I was very much attracted to your heartfelt creations with great taste in embroidery motifs. I also think it’s important to work with the artists from other countries on gender issues.
10% of every purchases of our collaboration products will be donated to UN Women, just like we did for last year’s project.

Can you tell me your thoughts and reactions when we got in touch with you about this project?

Sisterでの国際女性デーの企画について知り、光栄に思いました。刺繍アーティストとして、アート業界にいる女性達に光を当てることは私の使命です。あなたが遥か日本の東京から私の芸術性を讃えるために連絡を取ってくれたとき、この企画で役割を果たせることが嬉しかったし、その一端を担えることを誇らしく感じました。

Sisterとのコラボレーションではマヤ・デレン、アニエス・ヴァルダを始めとする刺繍ポートレートが生まれました。どれも作っていてとても楽しかったです。Sisterと一緒にこの企画ができたことは、本当に幸運でありがたいことだと感じます。

P－ My initial reaction was excitement. Firstly because you found me on Instagram and secondly, that you love my work.

After learning about your collaboration with Sister and the International Women’s day project, I felt honoured. As an embroidery artist, my mission is to highlight women in the Arts. When you reached out in praise of my artistry all the way from Tokyo, Japan, I was excited to play a role and felt honoured to participate.

Collaborating with you on this project inspired hand embroidered portraits of Maya Deren and Agnes Varda among others, which were so fun to make. In truth, I felt privileged and blessed to do this partnership with Sister.


N－ 私はフェミニズムについて少しずつ関心を高めていくうちに、フェミニズムとはどういったことなのだろうかと改めて考えるようになりました。
様々な人の考えに触れ、一番大切なことは「選択肢がある」と言うことではないかと思いました。
これはジェンダーステレオタイプによって「女だから」「男だから」と言うだけで、自らの決定権を無くすことがどれほど苦しい生き方かを常々思い知らされてきたからです。
日本での教育や社会の在り方が無意識に差別的な思想が潜んでいて、恐ろしいことに自分も気づかずその思想に加担していることがありました。
ある本から「自分らしく生きるための、自分解放運動こそがフェミニズム！」と言う考えを学び、とても感動しました。
このシンプルな教えは私の人生において大切な教訓となりました。
性別に囚われることなくもっと自由に、自分の足で立って学ぶことや支援が必要なところに積極的に関わっていくことが更に大切だと考えています。

あなたの国での女性の現状、そしてフェミニズムについてどう思いますか？

N－Ever since I started learning about feminism, I have been trying to figure out what feminism is about.
After getting to know various perspectives, I now think what matters the most is about having options.
This is largely affected by my personal experiences of not being able to make decisions for myself because of gender stereotypes.
There was also a time I took the wrong side unknowingly as such discrimination is embedded in Japanese society and education.
Lately, there was a phrase I was really moved in a book I read – ‘feminism is a series of actions to free your real self in order to live your own life!’
This saying has been etched on my heart as one of the favourite quotes of my life.
I think it’s important to get involved proactively with someone or something that requires help, while continuously learning and thinking for your own self, thinking outside your gender box.

Can you tell us about the current situation of women and of feminism in your country? What are your opinions?

私はフランスで生まれ育ち、5年前からカナダのトロントに住んでいます。主として家父長制の文化で育ちましたが、同時に、マルグリット・デュラスやシモーヌ・ド・ボーヴォワール、モニック・ウィティッグのようなフェミニズムにおいて重大な役割を担った女性たちを生んだフランスの出身であることを誇りに思います。

ここ数年、世界的にインターセクショナルなフェミニズムが強く志向される中で、私自身も作品を通してその動きを後押しできるよう努めています。

カナダでの私の体験は、パーソナルでミクロなレベルの話になります。
私は、地元のものを買うように努めたり、地域のお気に入りのアーティストの作品を紹介したりするかたちで、コミュニティ内の女性支援が変化しているのを目の当たりにしています。ここでも、特にアメリカにおける学びと学習棄却とを目撃しながら、フェミニストのカルチャーが動き、強くなりつつあります。

連帯や包括性と、全ての人を唯一無二の存在たらしめる違いを尊重し合うこと。その二極の間でバランスを取る必要があるのだと思います。

P－This quote you mentioned is amazing and it definitely resonates with me.

I was born and raised in France and have been living in Toronto, Canada for the last five years. I grew up in a predominately patriarchal culture but at the same time, I am proud to come from France which is the home of Marguerite Duras, Simone de Beauvoir, or Monique Wittig, women who played such decisive roles in the arts for feminism.

I think over the last few years, there has been a strong global intention to make feminism intersectional and I myself try to do this work through my art.

My experiences in Canada are best represented in personal and micro levels.
I am witnessing a shift in support of women in my community, whether it’s going out of the way to buy local or promoting the work of our favourite local artists. The feminist culture here is moving and growing stronger, particularly as we witness the learning and unlearning in the USA.

I think we need to balance the dualities between togetherness and inclusivity while also celebrating the differences which make us all unique.


N－COVID-19の影響で世界の状況が一変したけど、このウイルスによって私は本当に大切なことに向き合う時間になったと感じています。
人種差別についての大きなムーブメントからも感じるように、故意に生み出された世界中の格差に歪みが生まれ、一人一人の声が国や政治、大きな力を変えるパワーを持っていることを目の当たりにしました。本当に凄いことだと思いました。

より良い未来のために学ぶこと、行動することを諦めてはいけません。
今回はこの企画に参加してくれてありがとう。また話しましょう。

N－Even though the world is seeing a drastic change with the virus, I feel that it gave us the time to stop and rethink what matters the most.
I have an extremely positive feeling on the recent movements against racial discrimination as it clearly shows that solidarity has the power to drive changes in politics and society.

We must keep thinking and taking actions in order for a better future.

Paulineは現在カナダのトロントに在住する刺繍アーティスト。
フランス生まれで、アートに情熱を傾ける生粋の映画ファン。映画祭業界でキャリアを積むかたわら、ヴィンテージのクルーネックスウェットに対するこだわりから刺繍を始める。カンヌ国際映画祭の期間中にはジェーン・フォンダに熱中し、そしてそこからpppaulineの最初のスウェットが誕生した。
それからまもなく、彼女は自分がインスピレーションを受けた女性を世界に発信する手段として自らブランドを設立する。彼女の友人やフォロワーがその活動に参加したいと手を挙げるまでに長くはかからなかった。これまでThe Black Madonna、Heather McMahan、Carrie Brownsteinなどのセレブリティーのために特注品を制作している。

最終的には彼女の愛する、ビスケットを紅茶に浸して食べたり、ソウルやディスコのレコードを収集したりする時間を作ることで、キャリアと自分のブランドpppaulineのバランスを取っている。


Pauline
Pauline is an embroidery artist currently living in Toronto, Canada.
This french native is passionate about the arts but those that follow her know she’s a true cinephile. While juggling her career in the film festival industry and her obsession with thrifting vintage crewnecks, Pauline started stitching. It was during her time at the Cannes Film Festival that she developed her obsession with Jane Fonda. Just like that, pppauline’s first sweatshirt became herstory.

Soon she built her brand as a way to showcase to the world the women who inspire her. It wasn’t long before her friends then followers wanted in on the action. She has made custom orders for The Black Madonna, Heather McMahan and Carrie Brownstein just to name a few.

Ultimately, she finds balance between her career and her brand pppauline by making time for her everlasting love of dunking cookies into tea and collecting soul and disco records.
