N- First of all, thank you so much for the effort you have put in our collaborative project, Uwe. I can’t describe how much a pleasure it has been to work with you.

I started my shop Sister in 2008. Its business is now owned and operated only by women including myself. It’s named after Yoko Ono’s song “Sisters, O Sisters” from the album “Sometime in New York City,” which has the spirit of 70s feminist movement. The lyrics to the song and also Ono’s book “Just Me!” have truly been empowering to me.
I’m extremely happy to take this opportunity to spread positive message to women, just like these creations did to me.

TISSUE Magazine

U- Thank you very much, Yumi. It’s a big pleasure for me too. I feel quite lucky to be a part of this collaboration.
As TISSUE Magazine, we feel quite honoured and see it as a duty to support freedom and equality all over the world. As a male creative director behind the project, I have a lot of respect for those topics and hope I am able to give something back to the women in my life as well as women all over the world.

N- You are Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director of TISSUE Magazine, published in Germany. I actually bought a few copies of the first issue when it came out. I immediately fell in love with the artistry of it, and have been a big fan of both TISSUE and your creations since then.
I certainly did not imagine back then that I’d be working with you in the future. This has been such an honour to be able to work with you and to share our thoughts and opinions.

Sister x TISSUE

U- We like to call TISSUE a liquid magazine. We skipped printed version after five issues back in 2015. We focus on our homepage (http://tissuemagazine.com/), our monthly mixtape series as well as exhibitions and other interesting events.
TISSUE is an independent project. All profit flows back, and everyone is working for free, me as well.

For me, the most important thing at TISSUE is the total freedom of expression in art and media, life and death.

In a workshop at University of Art and Design Offenbach, beginning in 2019, we decided to work together on new printed issue - TISSUE N° 666!

N- March 8 is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating women’s achievements.
In order to support gender equality, 10 percent of every purchase from our collaborative line will be donated to a women’s rights organization. The amount to be donated is 600 JPY for a long sleeve tee (retail price 6,000 JPY), 300 JPY for a tote bag (retail price 3,000 JPY), and 30 JPY for a sticker (retail price 300 JPY). Each purchase comes with a free postcard, designed by our guest artist, Uwe Jens Bermeitinger.

U- I chose the theme “sister sister sister” for the special March 8 collection. From sister to sister to sister; from TISSUE Magazine to Sister Tokyo to all women - because a part of the profit goes to Women’s Rights Advocacy Group.
The main design for the collabo is the merge of the TISSUE and Sister’s logo. I by myself love it very much and can’t wait to see it on people wearing it.

Uwe

N- For this year’s International Women’s Day, I see it as an opportunity to talk about gender equality.
Supporting women’s rights is not about criticizing men. I want to take action in order to make the society more comfortable to the people around me.

Issues related to gender and sexual diversity seem to really differ from country to country. Having grown up in Japan, there were some moments that I underestimated the possibility of myself, or held myself back from what I really wanted in life, because of gender stereotypes.
I want to inspire the next generation to push boundaries by breaking through such inner glass ceilings.

U-I like that you use the word “glass ceilings”. It immediately gives the feeling that these old structures are breakable and that you can even see through to a better equal world for everybody - not only women.

In Germany, these topics are quite popular but also quite hysteric and confusing. Still, in Germany, there is no real gender equality. There’s a gap when it comes to salary, power and representation. On the other hand, there is a lot of action going on in the fields of art, music and club culture. For example, my friends from POSSY (https://www.facebook.com/POSSYKollektiv/) - a creative club collective - put a lot of effort into the awareness of topics like sexual diversity, respect and gender equality on their parties and events. I know that there is still a lot of work to do.
TISSUE is supporting sexual diversity as well as gender equality since day one. It’s part of our DNA. We feature female artists and other interesting women in our “Natural Born” section without making a big fuzz out of it, like normal business.

Me personally, I don’t need men at all. I am quite sure, the world would be a better place if women would be in charge. I was raised by women - by my mother and my big sister - in times where it wasn’t that easy for single mothers raising their kids on their own.
They taught me from the beginning; there is no hierarchy in gender!

Uwe、

N- I think it’s so precious that, even though we never met in person, we can communicate with each other through fashion, culture and art, and work together to make the world a better place.
Thanks again for taking your time to share your thoughts with me, Uwe. I’d love to talk to you again!

U- Yes, that’s true. Still, I really hope to be able to visit Tokyo in person one day soon. So, maybe next times we’ll be talking in real life. I also hope that we will keep collaborating in the future.
Sending warm greetings to everybody involved.

P.S. TISSUE N° 666 is coming… (end of 2019)

Sister x TISSUE

Yumi Nagao is sitting on a stool in Shibuya. She’s crossing her arms on top of her legs that are crossed as well. Behind her, there’s a big shelf filled with selected books and zines. One of them is TISSUE Magazine N°1. Her look into the camera: Determined. Curious. Yumi is sitting still in the buzzing epicenter of her natural habitat: Her shop Sister in Tokyo.

Sister is serving with the latest sought-after supplies of fashion and culture. The concept of the store: Nice things for women, brought to them by women. In 2008, Nagao started working at the shop. Ten years later, she took over the direction. But before making Sister her baby, she was working as a buyer, commuting between New York and Tokyo. How she got her twinsie hand tattoo in NYC is just one of the things she told us, when we interviewed her for our Natural Born series.

A bit more meta than talking tattoos is the main reason for meeting Yumi: International Women’s Day 2019. Teaming up with her not only as a distributor, but also as a creative partner and inspirational force, TISSUE created two exclusive designs for Sister in order to celebrate international sisterhood. The collection will be available March 8th at the shop and online. The deal: 10 percent of the revenue will be donated to Women’s Rights Advocacy Group. Until the capsule’s gonna drop, read the interview below and get to know one of Tokyo’s strongest sisters.

INTERVIEW: NADJA PREYER
PHOTOGRAPHY: MANA KOMIYAMA
TRANSLATION: MAI MATSUOKA

T- Growing up in the prefecture of Kagawa, around 600 km away from Tokyo, you left the countryside straight after finishing your A-Levels. How did you get in touch with Sister?

N- When I was 19 and a trainee, I was working in a second-hand shop for a side hustle. During that time, I was sent to the US as a vintage fashion buyer. Even though I didn’t do anything for a while after this job, when I met the former director of Sister, he instantly asked me, if I wanted to join him. Of course I said yes. It was a pretty spontaneous decision. After 6 months, when Sister had some financial backup, I suggested to start buying collections of designers I loved at the time. He was also open for this idea, so I went for it.

T- So you’re only selling new stuff now?

N- No. In the beginning we were only selling vintage, then we switched to new stuff only, until we reintegrated vintage clothing again after 5 years.

T- What do you want to express with the collection we created together?

N- What I mainly want to achieve with my work for Sister and also with this collab is, that women start to change their minds when it comes to their own needs and goals in life. I think, women are the ones to do that, cause Japanese men feel super happy with their roles in our society. So why should they ever change anything? I guess most women in Japan start giving up at some point in their lives, cause they think ”it is what it is”. But no: Things don’t have to stay always the way they are. We have the right to be treated equal and we need to act, in order to make a change for ourselves.

N- “I’M AWARE AND HAPPY THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHER TYPES OF PEOPLE BESIDES JUST MEN AND WOMEN”

T- Why is your shop called “Sister”? Do you have a strictly- female policy when it comes to your employees?

N- In the beginning, I only wanted to be surrounded by women, yes. Not only because of the name of the shop, but also because I wanted to join forces with other women and build something together. Something that makes us stronger and gives us the opportunity to act autonomously in a male-dominated world. Of course, this is a stereotype, too. But if there would be a male shop person, we would probably have a hard time of giving him anything to do. Cause we want to do everything ourselves! Still, I’m aware and happy that there are lots of other types of people besides just men and women. As a shop director, I meet many interesting people, which inspires me and shows me what’s going on in the world. So I don’t want to exclude men or anyone. I’m not quite sure, what my policy is for now or if will have one in the future. But I feel that I want to try out new things.

N- “NOT ONLY MEN KEEP ON FEELING COMFORTABLE WITH THESE ROLES. ALSO WOMEN THEMSELVES SEEM TO GIVE UP TOO FAST WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR CAREERS.”

T- The „Pussyboat” was a construction plan for a vagina-shaped boat, made by japanese artist Megumi Igarashi. A few years ago, she had to stand trial in Japan for selling it. At the same time, the whole nation is celebrating Kanamara-Matsuri – a huge, annual ceremony in honor of the penis. Is this ludicrous comparison proof for your country’s outdated gender roles?

N- Yes. Even though Japan is a highly developed country, there are still lots of morals and ideals from back in the days circulating. I think people here want to present themselves open-minded on the outside – but on the inside, they secretly wish to keep the old standards. Also, the japanese government is reacting super slow to these issues. Of course, women are allowed to go to work, but when the time comes to have children, it’s predetermined whose role it will be to stay home and raise the kids. I think there’s definitely some support missing, that gives women the help they need to be reintegrated into working life after having a child. Not only men keep on feeling comfortable with these roles. Also women themselves seem to give up too fast when it comes to their careers. I am a mother myself, luckily a working one… And when I pick up my children from the Kindergarden, I almost only see women fetching their children.

T- You have two beautiful twinsie tattoos on the back of your hands. We’re not asking for the meaning of them, but please tell us where you got them.

N- During my work as a buyer, I went to the US every other month for around two weeks. I was rather staying on the outskirts than in the center of the cities. So there wasn’t much to do despite going to the cinema or getting tattooed. So me and my crew went to a studio and we all got inked together. It was a super spontaneous thing. There’s really no deep message behind them. But one thing that was important for me was that – if I get a tattoo at some point – it has to be an artwork that is related to the body in general.

T- Do you have more tattoos besides the two in your left and right hand?

N- Yes. I have two on my belly. An eye and a skull.

T- Why did you choose TISSUE as a partner for the collection?

N- The practical reason was: simply because I didn’t want to do it alone. International Women’s Day is a day we celebrate change. And change can only be done, if we all join a movement together. So I needed a partner in crime. When planning the project, I was talking to TISSUE because of another thing and suddenly it came to my mind like a flash: We gotta to do this together! I just felt that TISSUE was the right counterpart for this collection. So here we are.
